The Roots of Progress

An Encyclopedia of the History of Technology

Ian McNeil, editor

An encyclopedia covering, in brief, just about every subject in the history of technology, compiling the works of a few dozen authors. This one is a tome, weighing in at over 1,000 pages.

I have found this very valuable as a reference work, and I’m sure I’ll return to it multiple times. Like many such works, it can be dense and difficult to follow, especially when describing the workings of intricate machines or sophisticated processes. Supplement with YouTube.
