Orienting education toward excellence

I am a cultural commentator, law school graduate, and education policy advocate and cofounder of the Education Progress organization. Previously, I wrote about topics from the FAA’s hiring scandal to institutional capture at Wikipedia. I aim to be a chronicler of the institutional crisis, focusing particularly on education out of a conviction that the field has built on shaky-to-impossible foundations for generations and urgently needs to focus on raising the ceiling and teaching people to their level. We all benefit from institutions that make it easy to develop expertise and virtue.

Jackal on the internet

Between my Mormon mission in Australia, my six years as a Chinese language analyst in the Air Force, and my prior work at the Blocked and Reported podcast, I’ve seen enough sides of humanity that I take particular joy in telling the stories of every strange, earnest, easily misunderstood cultural niche I find – from ruthless Neopets capitalism to Wikipedia slapfights to the story of how I didn’t realize I was gay until almost four years after marrying a man. My husband and I now live in Seattle, where we spend our free time hiking and exploring the outdoors (sometimes with my realistic fursuit in tow). We are expecting our first child.
