Making sense of Chinese AI

Inferential Gap takes its name from the idea of inferential distance: the background concepts and context two people need to share before they can understand one another. This blog seeks to help bridge the inferential gap between the Chinese and western AI ecosystems.

I’ve spent most of my career working in China’s AI sector. I’ve also lived and worked outside China. I draw on this experience to write about AI governance and safety in China, as well as pathways for Sino–US cooperation to address shared AI risks.

My motivation comes from the linguistic and information asymmetries that limit western understanding of China, and from the potential stakes of misreading Chinese approaches to AI.

Nourished by connection and movement

I get a lot of joy from cultivating community and getting to know people deeply. Circling and time with my partner nourish me, and I love a good social deduction game.

Exercise gives me energy and helps me de-stress. I particularly enjoy cycling — whether in the mountains, at spin class, or through Beijing’s hutongs on a starry night. And no account of what sustains me would be complete without peanut butter!
